Brief Description: Priming Tail Parts - Learning how to sand.
|
|
In my marathon session to get all the horizontal tail parts painted this week I had primed the elevators yesterday, and today I swapped them out and primed the stabilizers, and then started to sand the elevators.
I sanded and sanded, and sanded, and they came out really nice. No nibs, trash, or orange peel, but when I got up the next morning and looked at them I suddenly realized that I had sanded right down to the fabric on the areas that had a hard point under the fabric, such as the elevator ribs tubing.
I panicked a little bit wondering if I had sanded enough to weaken the fabric, and I sent some pictures of my faux pas to my mentors and to Randy at Rans - They all came back and said they had done the same, and it was not an issue except a line might show in the final paint job. I studied the areas very carefully, and I could not see any fabric damage, and could see that there was still paint in the low areas of the weave indicating that I had not taken much if any of the fabric off, so I became comfortable that I had not compromised the integrity of the covering, and proceeded to the final coat of primer.
While applying the final primer coat, I went over the "over sanded" areas with 3-4 extra coats of primer to allow any lines to be sanded out. Once dry, I sanded, and sanded, and sanded, and then sanded some more on the line areas, and I got it really close, but try as I might I was not able to get the lines out. So - I got out my hobby air brush and filled in what remained of the lines with the narrow pattern of the little airbrush, continuing until I had a small build up "hump" directly over the lines. A short session with the sanding blocks finally erased any evidence of my indiscretions.. : )
In applying the primer, I easily have as much time into fixing this mistake as in the priming process itself....
