Brief Description:  First Painted Parts! - Elevators.

Today was a huge day - The first painted parts. The paint intimidates me, and the successful results I had today built a huge level of comfort that I can actually do this!

My paint scheme is pretty simple, but it has some raduised corners and symmetry on the right and left sides. I have watched painters better than I in the past, and they somehow have the ability to just eyeball this stuff -- Not me -- I am an engineer, so I work with very concrete lines and detailed dimensions. The way an engineer does this is to draw up templates using his favorite CAD program, and then have a local print shop make full scale copies.

On the areas to be taped I made three lines. One shows where the edge of the color will be, the second is offset 1/8" to show where I should cut the template, and the third is offset 1/4" from the color edge, and shows exactly where to place the 1/4" wide fine line tape that simultaneously seals the template to prevent over spray and tapes off the color zones.

To get the templates places correctly I cut several 1" holes in various areas of the template, then with the elevators placed on the stabilizers I located the templates where I wanted them and then taped over the holes. This held the templates in place, but allowed me to easily reposition them if needed, and it left all the edges free so I could apply tape to prevent over spray - It all worked very well.

I made some lines on my templates so I had a reference when it came time to line up the various sections. Before painting I covered the lines with clear packaging tape, and then a strip of masking tape. After paint, peel up the masking tape and the line is easily visible.

I had trouble getting the hinges over the stabilizers, so I used a threaded rod and a couple of bolts to spread them from .88" to .94" - worked like a charm!
