Brief Description:  Elevator and Stabilizer Paint Fixtures.

Confession time -- Nothing about this project scares me - Except the paint.... I have done several projects in the past, and I have tried parts of the paint process on some of them, and I had come to the conclusion that it is a process best hired out to the experts. Taking on the painting of this plane is outside of my comfort zone, but here we go......

I wanted to make a serious dent in the paint progress, so I decided to take on the 4 parts that make up the stabilizers and elevators. There is a lot of "hurry up and wait" during the paint process, and once the base color is applied I have 24 hours to get the clear applied, so this meant I had to carefully plan my week to get the priming and sanding done during the week with color and clear of the elevators on Saturday, and the stabilizers on Sunday.

Today I came up wtih fixtures to hold the 4 parts while painting. The original credit for this idea goes to Mark P. (Rans Clan forum owner) for a set up based on a hinge and threaded rod that allows the part to be easily flipped to access both sides. Glenn M. expanded on this concept by adding a tube to the threaded rod for extra strength, and coming up with a way to bolt to the hinges.

I used: An 8" (IIRC) 1/4-20 fully threaded carriage bolt with a 6" steel tubing spacer attached to a cheap door hinge. Once these were located on my saw horses, they worked for both the elevators and stabilizers by just unscrewing the brackets from the ends of the carriage bolts - No need to relocate on the saw horses for these parts.

For the elevator hinges I copied Glenns use of a 1/4-20 threaded coupler, 7/8" long, captured by a P-clip. - worked fantastic! The hinges were held stationary with some threaded rods, aluminum angle, and a P-clip on the spacer tube.

To support the stabilizers I used some aluminum angle from the scrap pile with some 3" or 4" carriage bolts.
