Per the last description, I moved the mixture control rod from one side of the carburetor to the other, reversing its sense. With this accomplished, I ran the engine again, this time with lighting in the cockpit, so I could see the tachometer values.
These proved to the extremely high. I suspect them to be several times the actual value. I have contacted the tach manufacturer to learn how to set up the unit.
