Brief Description:  Researched and ordered magnetos

I have three magnetoes on hand. One is the Slick which came with the engine. It has the correct gear to interface with the engine, but would require overhaul. I have two Bendix mags, both of which would require overhaul, and both of which would require a gear to mate with the Contniental engine. All would require a a new spark plug harness, spark plugs, and "P" leads.

An alternative would be to use either e-mags, or lightspeed electronic mags. The emags are $1295, and would also need the same Continental gears. They would also need an ignition harness and plugs.

The Lightspeed mags are available as a complete dual set, including plugs and harness, for $2190. They need no gears.

My choices thus were:

1) Rebuild both Bendix units, buy new ignition harness and the Continental gears.
2) Overhaul one Bendix unit and the Slick, buy one gear, ignition harness, and plugs.
3) Buy an emag, have the Slick overhauled, and buy new ignition harness, plugs, and a Continental gear.
4) Buy the Lightspeed unit, and have the entire problem solved.

Options 1 and 2 are more expensive than options 3 and 4. Option 3 is slightly more expensive than option 4, Slick mags have a bad reputation, and option 4 makes it an entirely electronic system. That sounds like a better deal for slightly less money, so I placed an order for a dual Lightspeed unit.

There was some interfacing with Lightspeed over the timing. The original timing of the O200 had one mag at 28 degrees, and one at 30 degrees. Subsequent ADs require the use of 24 degrees, unless the cylinders meet certain requirements. Some of mine don't.

The FSDO which does my recurrent IA training requires AD compliance on certificated engines used on experimental aircraft. Although I don't think a problem would exist at 28 degrees, which provides slightly more power, I can't claim ignorance. Therefore, I had the ignition system set at 24 degrees.

The Lightspeed units were shipped on 4 April, 2012.
