Brief Description:  Continued Canopy track

This is my last day of work since I leave tomorrow for work, sort of, I will fly between Salt Lake City and Maui, HI over the holiday, and Anita will hopefully make it out to Maui the first day with me and stay while I do the Maui to Salt Lake legs (Christmas Eve redeye). It is not perfect since we will be apart Christmas eve and Christmas Day but Anita said she was willing to make the sacrifice, I can’t believe I came up with this plan!

I finished match drilling the track and spacer together and then worked on positioning the spacer on the fuselage. Again I am departing from the plans a bit, they have you rivet the track and spacer together, and then drill it to the fuselage. Since the holes are undersized at this point I am going to match drill the spacer to the fuselage keeping the holes under sized and then after the track and spacer are riveted together I will match drill the track assembly to the fuselage for the #6 screws that will hold it on the fuselage.

The forward most hole on the track was a real puzzler at first. The plans have a note that says to drill this forward most hole from the bottom. Earlier you have to taper the end of the track spacer, the plans shows how much, this makes the tip of the spacer match the angle of the canopy receptacle. The plans also have you drill a hole perpendicular with the taper. So later when the plans said to drill from the bottom of the F-882 which is the canopy receptacle I was confused since there is no pre-punched hole in my canopy receptacle, I called Van’s and even Joe was confused, I still don’t think he understood that the track will get a screw through the receptacle. This I think is another QB anomaly; most likely I should have received a canopy receptacle with a pre punched guide hole in this location. Since I could not get my angle drill in the area with the track in place, I spun a stubby drill bit in the hole to mark the receptacle, and then used the angle drill to make a pilot hole in the receptacle with the spacer removed.
