Brief Description:  Riveted on right elevator stiffeners

OK today counts as one of those frustrating how dumb can you be days? I continued with the right elevator. I had drilled out the holes yesterday so all that was required was to deburr and dimple the holes. Fine, now it was time for the riveting. I thought about the problems I had with the back riveting first rudder and they were all fixed with the second rudder, so this should be a snap. I set up for the first stiffener, double checked the rivet call out, and stated the first rivet, BAM, it clenched over and even dented the stiffener a little. Holy crap what the heck. OK this must be nerves, I drilled out the bad rivet and tried again, and again it goes bad; OK I will just come back to that one, two more not so good. I put everything down and regrouped what the heck was going on?

Well long story short if you have a 3 hose manifold and two are set to the compressor pressure (90psi) and one has a local adjustable regulator, make sure the rivet gun is connected to the regulated hose. I had set the pressure and even tested the gun against the table, but never realized that I was using a hose set for 90psi instead of the 38psi. You think I would have notice that the pressure did not drop as it should when you squeeze the rivet gun trigger. I had to go out so I waited until I returned to try again. All went smoothly, I drilled out the bad rivets, and those also turned out well. I did pre-squeeze the rivets for the three holes that were getting their third rivet. The holes were enlarged a little and I thought why take a chance and mess up another one. The pre-squeeze fattens up the rivets enough to take up the room of the enlarged hole thereby minimizing the chance of clenching the rivet.

Next it was onto the left elevator skin, it is all clecoed and ready for drilling but I called it a day and decided to catch up on my log entries.
