Brief Description:  Front Spar: Reinforcing angle prep

I got an early start this morning; I woke up at 6 am for some unknown reason and just could not get back to sleep. I worked on the front spar reinforcing angles which took some time. First I made the lines on the parts to mill them to the plan specifications. I was watchful of the 810 bracket since it will affect how much of the 404 nose rib I will have to remove, and that in turn will affect the location of the hole. After reading what other builders have had to say, it seems that minimum edge distance can be an issue on the 404 rib and 810 angle. More than one builder I have read about has had to order new parts from Van’s due to mistakes in this area. I really would like to build the entire empennage and not need to order new parts, or be concerned about parts I did use.

I have not decided on a band saw as of yet, I am not sure whether to go with the 10 inch bench top model or go the 12-14 inch route. I hear the large one comes in handy for woodworking stuff, but it is a big price jump. For the RV I think the 10 inch will be fine. I guess as long as I can find alternatives to the band saw to get the RV work done it can wait. At any rate, since I do not have a band saw, I did the rough cuts with a scroll saw. The scroll saw did a nice job; the reinforcing angles are 1/8 inch so not super thick. After the rough cuts I used the wheel sander and scotch brite wheel to finish things up. Next will be the bends after a break.
