I returned to Winter Haven, FL a week before Sun-n-Fun and finally finished up my private pilot's license! My old instructor Nick Lewis was no longer there. He decided to return home to Houston, TX to be with his family and to pursue another job so I finished up with Bobby.
We only had a few things to work on - 10 night take-off's and landing's, ground reference manuevers, and more practice with short and soft field take-off's and landing's. We were able to knock everything out in a couple of days.
Unfortunately, the normal DPE that Tailwheel's etc uses was booked and wouldn't be available again until after Sun-n-Fun. Rather than waiting that long Bobby and I decided to use another DPE over at Lakeland - Richard Hirsch. I was a little nervous doing this since no one really knew how the other DPE tested and also since Lakeland was Class D and getting very busy in preparation for Sun-n-Fun.
But Bobby and I flew over to Lakeland early on Saturday morning, 4/10. He flew a C-150 and I followed him in the Warrior. The reason we did that was so Bobby could hand-carry the aircraft logs over to Lakeland and then fly them back to Winter Haven after that portion of the oral and he wouldn't have to wait for me. I think the funnest part was leaving Winter Haven that morning since there were several families that were camping and they all stood outside their tents waving at me on departure. It was fun being solo and waving back.
Both the oral and flying portion of my checkride went fine. I had to plan a cross-country ahead of time but then replan it to a new destination while there with the DPE using current weather. Once in the air, we flew the beginning portion of the cross-country I had just planned, and then he said the weather just got bad and we would have to divert. He picked another airport and had me calculate a new heading, ETA, fuel-burn, etc to get there and we started in that direction. Once he was satisfied that I could divert we did upset manuevers under the hood, some instrument work,
