Brief Description:  Hang Engine

Matt, Steven, Ashley, and I went out to Perkins for breakfast this morning before Matt headed for home. Thanks again for your help Matt!

I was too excited about hanging the engine this morning that I never made it to church with the rest of the family. I really didn't like the idea of the engine hanging from the hoist any longer than absolutely necessary.

Before actually mounting the engine I swapped the 45 degree elbow for the oil pressure line from the side port to the back port so it wouldn't get in the way of the engine mount if I ever needed to do maintenance on it after the engine is hung.

I spent most of the day getting things lined up, inserting the 4 Lord type engine mounts and bolts, torquing the nuts, and installing the cotter pins. It wasn't really that difficult and just took a little patience raising and lowering the hoist and lining things up.

I found 3 places in Van's instructions that talk about mounting the engine. Two of them said it was easier to install the top bolts first and the third indicated just the opposite. I went with the top mounts first - the 2 out of 3 option, which worked fine but I think it would have been better to actually install the lower ones first and then use the hoist to pull things in place for the top mounts.

I couldn't actually fit a torque wrench in to tighten any of the nuts. I just tightened them until they bottomed out on the metal spacers and then made sure they were good and tight and that the holes were lined up with slots in the castle nuts. Installing the cotter pins was a bit of a challenge too given the tight quarters but it was all doable.

The engine is mounted and the hoist is no longer needed!
