Brief Description:  Hook Engine to Cable; Lower to Basement

This wasn't very wise but I couldn't pass up the chance to doan a pair of gloves, grab onto the cable, swing my legs up to the cable as well and slide down to the basement a few times. If the cable broke I would have probably broken my neck, but both Matt and I hung from the cable first and undulated up and down a few times. Other than a few creaks and groans from the cable compressing around the wood, the 1/4" steel cable held fine. Great fun!

The biggest challenge of the day was getting the engine through the doorway to the basement. Because of the angle of the winch, I had to be down a couple of stairs pushing the engine UP the stairs while Matt cranked on the winch to lift it. Once the engine was airborne, David and Matt pivoted the engine a bit onto its side so it could swing through the doorframe. Once the engine was through the door it was all downhill from there all the way, literally.

Using the tie-down straps from both above and below to slowly lower the engine down the cable couldn't have been easier. When the engine was at the base of the stairs we simply hooked the engine hoist back up to the engine and unhooked the engine from the cable. Done deal.

No dings or dents to the door frames, no broken tiles in the entry way, and best of all no heavy lifting and no one got hurt. The only evidence that we did anything was a 1/4" hole above the door frame, which for us short people, can't even be seen since it is right next to the edge of the top molding. Likewise, there is a similar hole in the drywall above the beam in the basement. That's it. Steven calls them birthmarks.

Sliding the engine down the stairs was a piece of cake. The braking straps worked great!
