Brief Description:  Tap New Matco Nose Wheel Axle

Several people on the various RV lists have had nose wheel shimmy or oscillation problems fore and aft. Matco came out with a fix for this by designing a new axle that will take the torque of tightening the wheel in the fork without mashing the bearings in the races. This setup allows the nose wheel to turn much more freely and to no longer bind and pull the nose gear leg down and under until the friction is overcome and the gear springs back forward and up again which was causing the oscillations.

The part cost approximately $60 but I didn't want to take the chance with having a shimmy and I've always been uncomfortable with how tight the nose wheel is and how difficult it is to rotate.

Anyway, the first step in installing this new axle was to run a 10-24 tap through all of the holes drilled in the side of the large axle nut to clean up the threads. One of these holes will be used as an anti-rotation pin for the nut once the axle is installed.
