Brief Description: Installed the Nosewheel Gear Leg, Main Fork, Stops
|
|
Today, I installed the nosewheel gear leg into the base of the engine-mount. It took me a little while to get the bolt installed into the top of the leg. Next, I installed the WD-631coupler flange, which acts as both a rotational stop for the nosewheel fork and wheel assembly, and as an axle-hub. I greased the nose wheel bearings for Aeroshell #5. The bearings have a built-in dust shield and black-rubber seal which also needs to be coated with grease because they contact the aluminum wheel assembly. The final step is to compress the two U-623 Axle Hubs and insert the wheel into the WD-630 Nose Fork. Once you get the hubs centered on the axle you insert the axle bolt, washers, and nut; torqueing to 7-10 ft/lbs. The excess drag on the nosewheel will loosen up after the first few hours of flight. The Next process is to tighten the gear-leg nut onto a spring (two inverted washers bent into a cone-shape) so the fork/wheel assembly requires 22 pounds pressure to swivel each direction. I used a fish scale and an S-hook off a bungie-cord inserted into a hole in the side of the fork. You have to make sure you pull perpendicular to the fork. Before I did this I inserted the grease fitting and lubed the fork/gear. For some reason, I could get exactly 22 lbs. pull to the right but it was 26 lbs. to the left. I had to swivel the fork stop-to-stop about 30 times until I could get a consistent 22 lb. pull in both directions. Once that was achieved, I had to drill the cotter pin hole through the hardened steel of the gear leg. Multiple drill-bits and an hours-worth of time the holes are done and the nosewheel is ready to install the wheel pants and support brackets. I cut out the excess material on the U-713C Support brackets and installed nutplates but I will wait to install the pants and brackets at a later date.
