Brief Description:  Prepare Intersection Fairings for Fitting

I’m finally to the point of cutting and finishing the Main Gear Intersection Fairings. Prior to the trial-and-error process of fitting the lower fairings to the main gear fairing and wheel pants, I had to epoxy the main gear fairings with a thick layer of microbeads to cover the rivets and to fill some of the pinholes. After sanding, I installed both main gear fairings over the shimmy-stiffeners and gear legs. Getting the hinge pins in was a challenge do the new wood stiffeners, but after lubricating the hinge pins with BOELUBE Lubricating Paste and slowly working the slightly undersized pins into the hinges, I managed to get both the fairings onto the main gear legs. In April 2021 (three years ago), I fabricated the upper and lower Intersection Fairing and now it’s time to finally cut off the spikey fiberglass edges and get them prepared for cutting. When I fabricated the Intersection Fairings, I had marked where I guessed the final cuts would be to get them to fit onto the Gear Leg Fairings and the Wheel Pants. Then, I added several layers of fiberglass cloth and covered with Peel Ply. Note-to-Self…if I ever use Peel Ply again it’s a good idea to remove the Peel Ply soon after the epoxy sets up. I left this on for 3 years and where the complicated curves and bends on the intersection fairings occur, I applied two overlapping layers of Peel Ply. Well…true-to-form the bottom layer did not peel off like it was supposed to and was embedded into the epoxy. GRRR! After 3 hours of carefully scraping, cutting, and sanding; I got the excess Peel Ply removed and am ready to cut and fit the Intersection Fairings.
