Brief Description:  Safety Wiring the Propeller Hub Bolts

After flattening the aft spinner hub using a caliper and adjustable square (1st pic), I safety-wired the propeller hub bolts. This was a chore, to say the least, because there is very little room and only one safety wire hole in each bolt head. I’m not very skilled at safety wiring, and the process required marking the bolt heads with a sharpie to indicate where the “torqued” bolt head location is, then loosening the bolt to get a safety wire threaded through the single bolt head hole, threading under the pigtail wire, then finally making the first wrap in a counterclockwise direction to get it very tight around the bolt head. Next, I had to re-tighten the bolt so the head aligned with the sharpie-mark at its “torqued” location. The next step was to measure the distance to the appropriate hole in the next bolt, clasp the wire at that measured spot with the safety wire tool and twist the safety wire clockwise until it reached the next bolt head hole. Then I had to mark the torqued location of this bolt head, loosen the bolt until I could thread the appropriate untwisted wire through the bolt head, re-torque the bolt, then finally create an inch long pigtail by twisting counterclockwise. Unfortunately for me, I had to think upside-down and backwards for every other bolt head to get the wires threaded through the appropriate side of the 2nd bolt head so my safety wire was always pulling in a “righty-tighty not lefty-loosey” direction. After several failed attempts, I finally got all 6 Propeller Hub Bolts properly safety wired and checked by another more experienced A&P certified builder.
