Brief Description:  Repainted Cowl Interiors

After I painted both cowl interiors, I read an article from Vetterman’s concerning cowl paint and heat shields. What he said in the article was paint the cowl interiors with white or silver, high heat resistant paint. Dark paints absorb radiant heat...DUH! The reason I painted everything low gloss black was I needed three spray-cans of high temp paint and could not find three cans of the same stuff anywhere in town; except for the black low gloss. So…its back to the auto parts stores to find some white paint. I found the same two cans of white 500-degree F paint I found before AND another type of ceramic infused paint that can resist temperatures of over 1500 degrees. That should work; right? Wrong answer, Bubba! After sanding to rough-up the paint for another application, I applied the very high temp paint over the already cured, black paint. Within minutes, the new paint began chipping and peeling the black paint, much like etching primer does with incompatible paints. CRAP! More work to do to fix this new issue I created! After the new paint cured I re-sanded and everything and sprayed the remaining two cans of compatible 500-degree F paint over the what was left of the black on the lower cowl interior and just the inlet ramps of the upper cowl (because I expect the exterior cowls will be white when they are finally painted, permanently.
