Brief Description: Install Oil Access Door (Cont.)
In the firewall forward kit, VANs sent an oversized, fiberglass Oil Access Door. A first I planned to replace the fiberglass door with one made of aluminum. After I cut out the aluminum, I realized the door was too flimsy using .020 aluminum so after drilling all the holes I tossed the aluminum and used the original door sent in the firewall forward kit. This too, has its drawbacks. The biggest issues are the fiberglass curvature is not the same curvature as the cowl and also, the fiberglass is thicker than the indented base of the door opening. I sanded the base as much as I could after riveting the reinforcement plate but realized I would have to build up the cowl with multiple strips of epoxied fiberglass cloth.
