Brief Description:  Empennage Fairing Fiberglass Work

While I was recovering from back surgery, my R-14 hangar-mate worked on the Empennage Fairing that goes around the vertical stabilizer in the tail-section. The fairing from VANs did not fit around the horizontal stabilizer very well. In some places I had gaps up to ¾ inch and in other places, it was relatively flush with both stabilizers. Dr. John Heit worked on-and-off for 4 weeks to fiberglass in the gaps, then sand down through the original fiberglass to new fiberglass layups and flox/microbead fillers to get the Empennage Fairing flush with both horizontal and vertical stabilizers. He did an awesome job and I’m very appreciative. I still have some work to do on this fairing. I will embed Tinnerman Washers into all the fiberglass parts where a flush screw is securing the fiberglass. It’s a lot of extra work and expense to do this, but I should never have a fiberglass crack from a screw head, using Tinnerman Washers. Thanks again to Dr. Heit for doing this fiberglass filling/sanding!
