Brief Description:  Install Engine Filter Bypass/Alternate Air Cable

In late December of last year, I installed the Alternate Air/Inlet Filter Bypass Door onto the side of the Engine Air Inlet Snorkel. Today, I made the final cable connections to the I0-360 Filter Bypass Door. The filter bypass door is manually operated from the cockpit using a control cable on the instrument panel. I mounted my control between the Throttle and Prop Controls. This filter bypass is opened in an emergency and has to be closed/reset on the ground, after landing. The first step for installing the filter bypass door was to drill a cut-out hole 2 5/8” on the flat area on the outboard side of the Snorkel. Next I fabricated the filter bypass flange into the cutout, drilled mounting holes, bent and partially crimped a stop-tab at the top, then mounted a nutplate on the bottom of the flange. To connect the control cable, I first cut the cable housing with a bolt cutter and attached the foremost portion of the cable with an ‘un-cushioned’ cable clamp onto the cylinder cover mounting screw to ensure the outer cable would not slip when I pulled on the door control. Then I ground-down a metal stop-nut, attached to a flat head screw, wrapped the control wire 3x around the screw and capped with a washer and stop-nut. I also insured I had adequate clearance for my aircraft battery when I routed the control cable. I tested the mechanism a couple of times and am happy with the installation.
