Brief Description:  Install Engine EGT & CHT Sensors

It’s time to install the Engine Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) and Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) sensors. In the first picture I am marking where to place the EGT sensors. I installed these first before I installed the CHT sensors. Now, looking in hindsight, I should have installed the CHT sensors first, because the EGT wire were constantly in-the-way while trying to install the CHT sensors (especially on the left [pilot’s] side of the engine)! After marking, I drilled a #30 sized bit hole and clamped in the EGT sensors. The 2nd picture shows a close-up of the installed EGT and CHT Sensors on the #1 Cylinder. The last picture shows the right side of the engine with the sensors installed, wires connected to the Grand Rapids Engine Information System (EIS), and everything secured with white, cushioned clamps which are more heat-resistant than black cushioned clamped. This didn’t all go off without a hitch, though. While installing the CHT sensor on the #3 Cylinder, I cross-threaded the sensor into the engine block and had to get a ‘thread-chaser” in to clean up the messed-up threads…not fun; AND I said a lot of bad words before I got the threads cleaned and the CHT installed. Note to self; thread the CHT sensor into the engine block with your fingers for at least two turns before using a screw driver to tighten. This little screw-up took two minutes to mess-up wasted 5 ½ hours to fix.
