Brief Description: I0-360 Filter Bypass Door Installation
Even though RV’s are not certified to knowingly fly into icing conditions, RV Instrument Pilots will, from time-to-time, venture into the clouds and get into icing. As a safety feature, to insure the air filter does not get blocked with ice (or I suppose sand, dirt; or maybe even a smushed bird), VAN’s has recommends we install a filter bypass door on the Snorkel so the engine can keep breathing in an emergency. The filter bypass door is manually operated from the cockpit using a control cable on the instrument panel. I mounted my control between the Throttle and Prop Controls. This filter bypass is opened in an emergency and has to be closed/reset on the ground, after landing. The first step for installing the filter bypass door is to drill a cut-out hole 2 5/8” on the flat area on the outboard side of the Snorkel. Next you place position the filter bypass flange into the cutout and tilt it approximately 10 degrees (so it’s level, in-flight) and drill mounting holes,
