Brief Description: Adjusting the Skybolts
|
|
I had to take a several days off for a flooded crawl-space under my house. A pressure relief valve blew on a water heater and the valve malfunctioned…Grrr. Anyway, for the past couple of days I’ve been fighting with the locking adjustment on the Skybolts. When I purchased these, I thought I would really like the Skybolts; not so much, now. Just like Van’s instructions for RV-7’s, the instructions for the Skybolt adjustment were nonexistent. I tried calling the company, but the only way you can contact them for support is by sending an e-mail. After a couple days of no reply’s, I started disassembling the Skybolts by removing an O-ring and pushing on a locking pin that releases what should be an “internal” ball bearing about 3/64” in diameter, then turning the lock assembly while holding the pin in-place. After two days of screwing around with these things, ruining five Skybolt assemblies, and losing 6 of the ball bearings; I finally got them all adjusted to the proper closing height. In the units where I lost the ball-bearing, I just epoxied the threads. Done! I bought these Skybolts a couple years ago. Hopefully they improved the design since then. They work well when they are adjusted properly, but I’m not sure I will recommend them to anyone.
