Brief Description:  Installing the Cowling Piano Hinges

I’m back on the cowling and it’s finally time to install the piano-hinges on the sides of the cowlings. I purchased the very pricey, right and left “Aerosport” Pin Covers. Of course, mine will say RV-7A. I haven’t received it yet, but had to look up the installation instructions to figure out how long to make the piano hinges on the sides and also had to figure out how to fit the piano hinges around the SkyBolt Receivers. VANs RV-7 instructions say to use a 1 1/8” piano-hinges on the sides of the cowling, but the RV-14 plans have a hinge with one half of the hinge one size, and the other half 1/8” wider. John Heit, my RV-14 builder hangar-mate, had some left-over piano hinge material which he gave to me to “offset” the hinge so you see no daylight between the upper and lower cowling seam-lines when the cowlings are installed. Today I spent most of the day drilling and fitting the lower cowl hinges. Tomorrow, I will drill the upper cowl hinges, disassemble, debur, redrill with #30 drill-bit, dimple-drill the cowlings, and rivet.
