Brief Description: Cut/Fit the Engine Cowling (cont.)
Next, I made a 6” angle-brace with a washer as a spacer 3/8” into the front of the cowl to get the alignment with the propeller backplate (this comes from the RV-14A plans). Next, I aligned the aft-part of the upper cowling with the measured center of the fuselage and I used duct tape to secure the upper and lower cowlings to the plywood spacer behind the propeller plate. I am surprised…this may all fit together with some sanding/grinding work in the front where the flanges between the upper and lower cowling some together. Tomorrow, I will layer another 1.88” masking tape on top of the aft-part of upper cowl and will make a “rough” cut-line for the upper cowl. I expect it will take me several days of sanding/fitting/sanding/fitting to get the upper cowl to mate with the fuselage skin, but for the first time in a long time, I have some hope this will actually fit!
