Brief Description:  Cut/Fit the Engine Cowling

I’ve spent several days researching the VANs Forums to find out how other builders cut and fit the “Pepto-Bismo Pink” Cowlings. The instructions VANs sent with the kit are not updated from the piece-of-crap grey cowlings they had a 3rd party vendor produce in 2006. In 2007-2008 they got another vendor to make new, supposedly better, Pepto-Bismo Pink” Cowlings. These are slightly better, but VANs didn’t update their plans to reflect changes for the new cowlings; and they never will update their RV-7A plans because no one is buying these anymore! So, ignorant pukes like me are stuck trying to figure out how to install them without spending an inordinate amounts of fiberglass rework time. Oh, and did I mention, I hate frickin’ fiberglass! There, now that’s off my chest, I can continue with some good news. Fortunately for me, several guys posted blogs on how they cut and fit their Pepto-Bismo Pink” Cowlings. Some of them were RV-8A builders, but it looks like the basics are about the same for both models of airplanes. One of my hangar-mates just built and RV-14A (which has very good instructions and 99.9% of all the premade parts fit) and he gave me his plans to use. I’m finding out some of the RV-14A instructions will work with the Pepto-Bismo Pink” Cowlings and some won’t but at least I have something to work with. Time to get the cowlings off my storage scaffolding and start doing some measurements. I wasn’t happy with the 2” offset line I made months ago, so I bought some 1.88” wide masking tape and re-marked a new line for the aft-end of the cowlings. I like this much better!
