Brief Description: Attempted to install Vetterman Crossover Exhaust

Before I cut and install the cowlings, I need to install the Vetterman Crossover exhaust system. I ordered this when I ordered my engine in 2008 and the exhaust label in the firewall forward kit from VANs showed the exhaust was EA EXH 8A IO360-M1B. At the time, I didn’t have any idea this was for an RV-8A. Even if I had known that, I would have assumed the Vetterman Crossover Exhaust system was interchangeable for the 7A and the 8A. Well, now its 14 years later and when I tried to install the exhaust, it doesn’t fit around the nose gear triangular frame at the top of the nose gear and the flanges for the cylinder exhaust port are not flush with the exhaust system due to the bends in the pipe. I called up VANs and explained the situation. The answer was not satisfactory…” We have a 30-day return policy and you should have let use know we sent you the wrong exhaust system back in 2008.” I had them look up their invoice and it clearly showed they sent me the wrong exhaust system. Not only that, but Vetterman sent paperwork with the exhaust system that said, “There is no stated warrantee, but if the exhaust doesn’t fit, sent it back to me.” Unfortunately, Vetterman retired and sold his business to another guy and apparently, the new guy isn’t honoring the old unstated warrantee. The cost for a new exhaust system is $1,100. I’m still waiting for a response from VANs. I’m hoping they make this good. While trying to install the RV-8A exhaust, it became apparent I had to move the Grand Rapids Fuel Flow monitoring sensor, no matter what exhaust system I put on here, so 15 hours later, its all moved and will be out of the way of the exhaust. What a pain this has been!
