Brief Description:  Mounting the Engine

My first attempt to mount the engine didn’t go very well. I had to move the oil pressure hose VA-128 Restrictor fitting to get enough clearance for the engine mounts and we messed with trying to get all 4 bolts started at the same time for about 2 hours. Dynafocal Mounts have the upper two bolts angled down-and-inward, and the lower bolts are angle up-and-inward with about .001-inch gap-tolerance. You can’t beat on the bolts with a hammer or you will screw up the threads and you have various washers on the insides and outsides of the fittings to hold in-place while you wrestle a 350 lb. engine hanging on a hoist chain. That being said, on the first attempt we got two bolts started on the top and it appeared we were up to ¼ inch off at the bottom. So, we gave up for the day and my intent was to call up a friend who had previously mounted over 15 engines on Dynafocal Mounts. Bad news was, this is elk-hunting season in Montana and my friend was out hunting for two weeks. Good news was, he had a good enough cell connection at his hunting camp he could give me a little advise over the phone. The next day, my wife, my hangar-mate (Dr. John Heit) who just finished building a beautiful RV-14, and I re-attempted the engine install. This time, it went better; thanks, entirely to John’s and my wife’s help. It still took us 5 hours but it was finally installed; bolts tightened until they ‘bottomed out’, and cotter pins inserted. It will be a couple of weeks before I can work on it again, but this was definitely a milestone I have waited for a very long time!
