Brief Description:  Install the Fire Shield on the Firewall

It took me 2 ½ days to install the Fire Shield on the Firewall. The Fire Shield material cut-outs made from the paper templates worked very well, but the process was time consuming. I first had to create panels which would be glued to the firewall with a “spray-on glue” AND a special gluing compound you dispense using a caulking gun. It is extremely messy but cleans up well using acetone. The pictures below show the cut-out material and the panels I had to create to fit around all the stuff on the firewall. When I was finished gluing the separate panels onto the firewall, I sealed all the seams with HVAC aluminum tape, then sealed the perimeter of the firewall with the gluing compound dispensed from a caulking gun. All-in-all, I’m pleased with the end product. It will take a couple weeks for my thumbs, wrists, arms, and fingers to heal from all the cuts I incurred from the sharp edges of the thin aluminum on both sides of the Fire Shield material. I tried to use heavy protective gloves, but I couldn’t maneuver the panel-pieces in place with all the glue. I went through 36 pairs of rubber gloves to get this done. I’m glad it’s finished. The next steps will be to drain the preservative oil from the engine, install the few fittings and hoses required prior to installing, and hang the engine. I’m excited!
