Brief Description:  Cowling 2” Scribe Line Offset and Z-Lok Fasteners

I’ve spent the last two days attempting to figure out where the horizontal cut-lines will be on the upper and lower cowlings. As usual, VAN’s instructions are very vague. The reason I need to know this is when I install the Sky Bolt Z-Loc Fasteners, the fasteners that are attached to the firewall need to align with the horizontal fasteners that attach the two cowlings together. I finally figured out where the cut lines will be, then changed my mind! I will use piano-hinges with pins to connect the upper and lower cowls on the horizontal instead of the Z-Loc fasteners. This will make the cowlings more robust and will make for cleaner lines after the airplane is painted. I will still use the Z-Loc Fasteners on the firewall, though. All the measuring and checking is still required to install the Z-Loc Fasteners, so even though it took me a lot of time, it wasn’t wasted. Before I install the Z-Loc Fasteners, I had to scribe/draw a line 2” aft of the firewall as a reference to cut the cowlings. After I scribed the line, I laid down 2 layers of electrician’s tape so I can butt a 2” wide bar against the tape to draw the rear cut-lines on both the upper and lower cowlings. I also marked the center lines of the cowlings and the corresponding center lines of the firewall. I was very surprised to find out the upper rivet lines forward of the windscreen are NOT CENTERED (they are off-center by approximately 5/8 of an inch). I assumed the “center rivet line” was really centered...not so! Anyway, it will still take a couple more days to install the Z-Loc fasteners, seal the firewall, and apply the fire-shield. At least I’m reasonably certain I know what I am doing now!
