Brief Description: Installed remote compasses & bracket into tailcone
This morning I drilled the holes to mount the compasses and used #6 brass machine screws and nuts to attach them to the bracket. I had previously primed the bracket in the backyard using a spray can. As a safety measure I drilled a couple of holes and threaded a tye wrap around the stack to hold them in the event the nuts came off the screws due to vibration. I couldn't find brass lock washers at Home Depot so I used neoprene washers under the brass flat washers to preload the nut threads to the bolt threads. We'll see how that works! Do they even make brass lock nuts? I never have enough of the right hardware.
I then attempted to install the bracket to the stringers while lying on my back in the tailcone. The shortest screwdriver that I had would not fit on the screw head due to the curvature of the skin. The home made 11/32" open end wrench (filed down a 5/16" wrench) would not fit on the nut (after turning the screw in the opposite direction) due to S-shape of the stringer. Luckily my brother Clark came over to eat BBQ chicken and had a Z-shaped offset screwdriver in his van toolbox that allowed me to get it on the SS #8 screw head after turning the screw the other way again. I then tightened the nylock nuts with the 11/32" socket and rachet. I was sweaty and hot with no air blowing into the tailcone and only dropped the tools on my face a couple or three times! Love this project!!!
Stacked Dynon remote compasses on bracket.
Using offset Phillips screwdriver and 11/32" socket to attach to the stringers.
Bracket with compasses installed just in front of the 708 bulkhead.
