Brief Description: Started on the empennage kit by inventoriing.

|
Traveled from Austin, TX to Griffin, GA (arrived Sun, March 4 to begin March 5) to attend the Alexander Technical Center to learn the skills to build my kit by having professional instructors to help guide me while learning to use the tools and the process of working with aluminum sheet metal. We were shown how to read the drawings and the instructions as we progressed through the kit.
We started by inventoring our Empennage Kit. Removed all components from the boxes and grouped together according to horizontal stab, elevators, rudder, verticlal stab, trim tab. All items were accounted for on the packing list for the empennage kit. We learned how to check off each item in the sub-kits including the misc hardware.
We had a short intro briefing slide show with Mike which showed us the tools we would be using. He recommended that we try the various brands of tools to find the ones we liked best. He said that it was not a race to finish the week, but to learn and get familiar with the process. Safety was emphasized when using the tools including eye and ear protection.
Horizontal Stabilizer - We began with the horizontal stab rear spars, reinforcing bar, and hinge brackets. Drilled center hinge bracket with its bearing Riveted it together Trimed the spar bottom flange Drilled the rear spar reinforcement bars and hinge brackets Front spars and angles next. Trimed and bent the 6 deg. bend on angles then bent the spars. Drilled angles with front spar using an easier method. Measured for correct distance from the centerline to locate the holes using edge distance requirements for drilling from forward side of the front stab. More room to maneuver the drill. Fluted ribs Clecoed HS frame (leaving out center nose and main ribs for later) Drilled remaing ribs with front and rear spar Clecoed skins to frame Trimed HS-404 Fitted center nose ribs and main ribs
Very tired after only the first day.
