Brief Description:  Concieve, buy supplies, build wing jig

My RV-8 buddy Bob was in town, so after he and I work our regular jobs, we get together and do some RV'n... Bob's schedule brings him to the Metroplex about once per quater so being that the wings are due to arrive next week sometime, I need to get crackin' on the wing jig/stand.

I call it a jig/stand because the original RV kits were not pre-punched, so it was crucial that a jig be built and the wings (and even the empennage) were built on the jig. The jig would insure that the parts were built square and without a twist. But these days, the kits are pre-punched so really, just making sure the holes are lined up when you drill and rivet insures that the parts are built true. Don't get me wrong, in building my wings, they will be built on a "stand" that is sturdy, square, level, and adjustable to very close tolerances... But the use of a jig is not necessary these days.

So it's not so much a wing jig as it is a wing stand to build the wings on...hence, the term, "jig/stand".

Ok, so it took all of the 3 days - Mon/Tues/Wed to get the skeleton of the wing stand built, even with Bob's help. The breakdown goes like this:

2/25 - Lots of 'figgerin'". I had already decided on whose wing jig/stand I was going to copy... (Thanks Derek, Dbro172 on the VAF) But to verify that I had all of the design elements handled, Bob snd I looked over the Van's drawing (12A) - and then we started second guessing/discussing different designs and pro's and con's, etc. and then we were out of time... I made a rough sketch of what I wanted, dimensions, etc.

2/26 - Shopping! Went to the aviation aisle of Home Depot and got the required "stuff"...boy it's a headache trying to prebuy all the intended hardware...but I think we did it...

2/27 - Build! We started cutting and building and got the skelton finished and looking good. I wanted to wait until the actual wing kit arrives to decide where I want to hang the spar supports because that will determine how much sitting vs. standing will take place
