Brief Description: Temporary pins for elevator/rudder hinges
A neat tool that my RV brother, Philip from Georgia (N546RV on VAF) helped me with are these pins used to temporarily connect the elevator to HS or the rudder to the VS. Again - all props to Philip - it was his idea completely. You start with a 3/16" steel rod (I bought a 3-foot section at Home Depot). I cut it into six pieces, 6 inches each. Then I chucked each piece in my drill and turned it down on the grinding wheel until I had a nice point on the end. The point was then dulled slightly on the scotchbrite wheel so it won't scratch anything. Unchuck the spear, put it in your bench vise and bend it over with a hammer. - just past 90 degrees.
Note: The hinge brackets are only about 1/2" wide, so you only want the horizontal part to be about 3/4" wide. Any longer, and it is too wide to fit inside the elevator gap...ask me how I know...
