Brief Description:  Landing Gear Alignment check #2

This work on this log was completed over two sessions and two days, but I had enough other pictures to put in for this day. Just wanting to confirm the numbers a second time turned into a frustrating day in the shop, but in the end, all is well, like life. I wanted to redo the alignment checks, so I standardized the position of the four-foot levels, hung the plumb bobs again, and remeasured the distances from the centerline. Similarly, the right side was spot on, and the left was off significantly, which is annoying, as something is incorrect.

So I discussed my methodology with Bob and compared how he did it, and he suggested that I install the wheel and mount the level/aluminum angle to the brake disk to increase the size of the plane. Since the axel mount has a small surface area relative to the brake disk, this should improve the measurement accuracy. Using a leftover piece of 32" stick of aluminum angle and remeasuring the distances, the left side was back within tolerance, but now the right side was slightly off for the first time. Initially, this frustrated me, but Bob reminded me this is a more accurate measurement. Just to be sure, I purchased a four-foot piece of 1/16" angle so I could measure at 36" distance, and the final measurements were the same:

31 5/8" - 31 3/4" = 1/8" toe in .199 off

31 7/8" - 31 13/16" = 1/16" toe out .099 off

As they are both off under a 1/4 degree, I am moving on.
