Brief Description:  Hung the Engine!

I borrowed an old 5/8'' wrench from Jeff and ground down the sides. This would allow us to have access to the nuts.
Tim Conway, Jeff Paden and I hung my Superior XP-360 engine today! We used the Illustrated Guide to Hanging the Engine, written by some RV builders in Tampa. They provided a lot of good info. Tim and I dragged Jeff's engine hoist to the shop and moved things around so that the hoist could be used. Jeff got a length of chain to attach to the hoist and the engine. The tail was raised onto the tail stand and sandbags from Jeff were placed on the tail. We took the engine off the stand and started to run the engine bolts. We had some problems getting the bolts thru the two bottom holes. We initially tightened up the top right and then the top left bolts, per the Guide's notes. The top bolts were loosened and then the lower bolts were inserted. After all of the bolts were inserted, the lower bolts were torqued to approximately 40 ft-lbs. Cotter pins were installed. The values for the bolts is 450-500 in-lbs, or 37.5-41.6 ft-lbs. Jeff had a torque wrench for that range. The torque wrench and socket could not reach the top bolts, so they were tightened but not torqued. Tim's brother probably has an adapter that we can use. Many photos were taken.

--Update 11/1/10-Tim brought the adapter over and torqued the top two bolts.
