Manual Reference:  Baggage Door.
Brief Description:  Fabricate a shim for the forward baggage door.

After assembling the forward baggage compartment door and putting it into position, I notice about a 1/16 inch gap where the door did not conform to the outer forward upper skin. This is a very common problem in the design of the door and talked about a lot on the VAF forum. Two options are discussed on the forum. One is to epoxy the outer door skin to the door ribs and cleco together and strap the door down. Then drill, cleco and rivet the door inner skin to the ribs from the inside, in hopes of holding the door in the correct position. The other method is to use a small shim to raise the top skin to the level of the door when is down and fully seated. This method seemed much better to me, and quicker for a known result. It only took 30 min to cut two strips of .020 material 7 inches long and 3/4 in wide to make a shim. One piece of shim is slightly shorter so the pieces would taper inder the skin. Match drill and dimple coutersink to the to match the outer skin and walla, you have it. A almost perfect fit with the door. In the picture below the shim may be hard to see.
