Brief Description: Remade elev up stop/Fit rudder bottom
After I wrote yesterday about the problem with the edge distance on the elevator up stop and my solution to leave it or drill for another bolt running the risk of interference, I again "stewed" about it a good portion of the night. Sometime during the night I decided that if I could get a right angle drill in the tail, we would make a new piece using 1" angle instead of 3/4" angle thus eliminating the problem with edge distance. The angle drill fit, just barely, and so I was able to back drill the new piece so it would line up with the holes in the longerons. As you can see in Image #2, they came out NICELY. Claude then cut the piece down (Notice in Image #1 the heavy coat Claude has on) while I was drilling out the rivets on the old stop. Both procedures came out nicely. We then primed the new piece and will finish installing it tomorrow. The procedure took about an hour and I bet that I had "stewed" about it for at least 40 hours......We then fit the rudder bottom. It had a "funny" cutout that needed to be made but it came out OK as well..... All in all it was a very satisfying day even though it was COLD in the hangar. The temp was only 36 but it had us shivering!......I wonder what I will be "stewing" about next?
