Brief Description:  Trim cable installed/vert stab attach plate drille

We installed the manual trim cable in the fuel selector plate, riveted the anchor nut to the trim access plate and installed the cable. After attaching the plastic clevis, we checked the travel of the trim tab. We had more than enough up, 35 degrees (N >25) and down travel of 32 degrees (N 35). At 32 degrees, the tab would not go down further because it hit the hor. stab. I talked to Scott at Van's and he suggested that I try to readjust the cable to get closer to recommended travel. We did this & now we are exactly as specified up and down. As I read on Van Air Force forum, the tab is zero when I can get 2 fingers under the knob. I had wondered how I would know where zero was for take off. I had installed a temporary hinge pin in the tab when I was building the tab 8 months ago, but today, I exchanged it for a stainless steel pin and bent it 2 times and safety wired it to the hor. stab. rib. It would have been so easy to forget that and the temp pin could have fallen out in flight..... We then began the process of attaching the vert. stab. The 1st. step was to attach and drill the 981 vert stab attach plate and hold it in place with AN 3 bolts. Much to our surprise, when we were drilling the flange on the angle through to the deck and the angles under the deck, I ran into a hidden flush rivet. I drilled out approx. a half of the rivet leaving the tail where the washer and nut should go. There is no mention of these rivets on the plans but they surely made a mess for us. I was finally able to get this rivet out using a file to remove the shop head. I had not drilled the other of the 2 holes so now, I will call Van's find out what we should do. I think the procedure would be to drill 2 more boltholes and fill the 3 holes with bolts. Sometimes a problem hits me completely by surprise.
