After reading some posts on the subject on the VAF site, I decided to scuff the ribs with a scotchbrite pad prior to dimpling. This ensures the dimpled area gets a good scuff and makes it easier to do the scuffing because the dimples catch and tear the pad otherwise. I then started dimpling the parts.
