Brief Description:  Finished fluting ribs, assembled torque tube brack

Finished straightening the 1010 and 1012 ribs. The 1012s required more fluting then the 1011s but even then it didn’t take long to get it all done. Measured and cut the flat stock to create the 1029 D & E spacers for the left wing. Marked the spacers with center lines. I then cut some angle stock into the 1029 C parts. Clamped the spacers to the torque tube bracket, aligned the center lines and matched drilled using the bracket as drill jig. Clamped both halves of the torque tube brackets together with the spacers and the VA146 bearing. I then went to cleco this assembly onto the 1010 rib and ran into a fit problem—as in the brackets wouldn’t fit between the rib flanges. It appears to me that when the flanges on the bracket were bent (and it’s relatively thick stock) that it distorted enough to create interference with the shape of the rib. My solution was to use my big 3M wheel to grind a little off the brackets to get them to fit. Not a lot, just enough to relieve the interference. Once I got the brackets clecoed to the rib I went to clamp the 1029 angle to both for match drilling and discovered that I had cut the angle too short. I’m not sure why I did this but for some reason I cut the spacers before cutting the angle even though the angle step comes first in the plans. Anyway, the length measurements for the spacers were all in 32nds. The angle was in 16ths. What did I do? Yep, I measured the angle in 32nds as well and made my first screw up for the wings by cutting the angle too short. I went head and cut a new one but had to order some more angle stock from Van’s as there wasn’t enough angle provided in the kit to fab more than two 1029’s. Good news is since I’m only working on one wing at a time it’s no big deal, that and a new length of angle is about $3 so this was cheap as far as screw-up’s go – just embarrassing that I messed up such a simple measurement. Moral—slow down, measure twice, cut once. So I cut a new out of the remaining angle stock, clamped it in-place and match drilled it
