Brief Description: Forward control bearings
|
|
Have never been real impressed with the IGUS bearings in the forward position. [Timewarp: I should have ordered 'high temperature' bearings, they don't have end float]. Radially they work fine, but fore and aft they have about a 1mm end float. I also seem to be missing one IGUS bearing from the 6 I bought. [Timewarp: At the end of the process I discover I magically have 6 IGUS bearings again. This only happened because I now only need 4].
Have seen a most informative video from the Cozy Grrrls on using a ball bearing in this position, and decided to give it a go. I only have pictures for the second, see a link below to the video I made of the first I made.
Covered the bench with pallet wrap, placed a 5/8" bearing on it, and covered it with another layer of pallet wrap. (This failed the first time, so I had 3 layers the next time). I wet out 8 x BID over that and put another layer of pallet wrap over that.
This assembly gets its shape from a special form made from a bit of hardwood with a shorl length of 43mm OD 2mm wall PVC tubing 5min floxed into it. Squooge that over the assembly and weight, then stick a piston in the end, the hole I cut out of the hardwood with a 1/4" cup head bolt through it, and weighted all with bricks.
I made another flat bit of 13 x BID for a backing plate.
