Brief Description:  trim ends and plan fitting of fiberglass tips

The first step in this stage of the process was to trim the ends of the horizontal stabilizer and elevators at right angles to the spar. Because of the way the skins were bent, they were at angles to the spar and not aligned with each other. I set up a band saw level with my assembly table, and made a first cut which I expected to be a practice cut, just to get used to the process and have a square edge to work from. I made the cut about five or six inches outboard of where I expected the final cut to be, based on measurements from the plans. But when I set up the fiberglass tips next to that cut, I saw that they just barely cover the length they need to cover to align with the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer. In fact, I wish I had made my first cuts and inch farther outboard, because that would have given a better alignment between the front of the counterweight tip and the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer. But I think these cuts will be okay. Tomorrow I need to add the end ribs to the elevators and horizontal stabilizer tips, and make a decision about reworking the counterweight ribs or reshaping the form blocks and making new ribs. In image 2 below the red tape marks the approximate location of where I thought the final cut would be, based on plan measurements. But it is clear that the fiberglass tips don't really reach all the way to align with the stabilizer leading edge, and triming the skins any farther inboard will make that misalignment worse. So I'm goint to make my first cut also my final cut as far as this skin trimming is concerned.
