Brief Description:  horizontal stabilizer skin fitting

While the elevators are not complete, I feel confident that they can be saved, so I spent today working on the horizontal stabilizer. I have decided to fit the skins to the horizontal stabilizer before deciding on the exact position of the horizontal stabilizer. I will not do the final rivetting until much later, but I want to get the skins clecoed onto the stab skeleton before I drill the holes for mounting the stabilizer to the tail cone stringers. This may be a minor deviation from the sequence specified in the manual. But I am concerned about the rigidity and dimensional stability of the stab skeleton without any skin, and I dont want to drill the holes based on a too-flexible spar and rib structure. I have added a couple of (maybe temporary) diagonal braces to that spar/rib structure in hopes of keeping it stabilized while the skins are fitted, and later while the mounting holes are drilled. Today's work included multiple fittings and adjustments to get the leading edges aligned. then I drilled and clecoed the top surface of the skin to the main spar, and to the middle ribs, and about a third of the clecoes to the forward spar. so far it's looking pretty good. tomorrow's work will start with completing the drilling and clecoing of the skin to the forward spar and the center rib. then there will be a decision to be made: whether to wrap arround the leading edge and continue drilling and clecoing at the forward spar, followed by the ribs, and finishing at the main spar; OR, and this is a big decision, whether to start by anchoring the bottom skin at the main spar, and then proceding forward along the ribs and ending at the forward spar, hoping to see a lot of progress tomorrow.
