Brief Description:  evaluate starboard hole move, plan port move

After a couple days out of town, I was eager to get back out to the hangar and see how my effort to move the outboard inlet hole on the starboard side had worked out. I had cut the corner of the upper cowling completely off, moved it 2.25 inches farther outboard, and secured it in its new position using two layers of fiberglass. When I placed it back on the engine, I kind of wished I had moved it another quarter inch farther outboard. The SCAT tube had to make a slight bend inward to line up with the inlet hole in the cowling, but it is definitely good enough. So I started planning how to do the same thing, or a similar thing, to the inlet hole on the port side. I am considering doing one thing differently. On the starboard side, I had cut off just the forward corner including the hole. That worked, but it left me with a large gap and discontinuity between the edge of the moved corner and the rest of the cowl. That will require me to fill in the gap with spray foam and lay up a lot of additional fiberglass to fair out that gap. On the port side, I am considering a long tapered cut , which may allow me to just flex the hole outward and keep the outside curve of that area. In that way, I may be able to fill in the gap with a flatter patch. I'm not sure this will work, because I can foresee that the hole won'just move straight out to the left, it will try to go somewhat left and somewhat upward, which would not be good. So I have to consider this further before deciding.
