Brief Description: setting up engine mount feet in welding fixture
|
|
I finished welding all nine of the motor mount feet, and started assembling them onto the welding fixture. As I noted yesterday, the welding fixture has multiple bolt holes for different applications, and I was really paranoid about getting one of the feet in a wrong hole. As I was measuring to prevent that, I noticed that my plans for the thatcher CX4 specify different dimensions from the drawings I got with my revmaster engine, and neither of them match any of the holes in my welding fixture. I guess I just got lucky with my first three practice attempts at making a motor mount. I was using some surplus 4130 tubing in 7/8 inch diameter, which is much bigger than the plan-specified half inch tubing. So that left plenty of roof for error, and one of those practice mounts actually fit for mounting the engine onthe plane. But the plans-specified half-inch tubing, with 0.058 wall thickness, leaves absolutely no margin for error with the 3/8 inch bolts. So I had to go back out to the airport and measure my engine, finding that the firewall side of my fixture is okay, but on the motor mount side I am going to have to elongate all four holes to get the feet into their proper positions. I am so glad I found this out before actually welding up this version. I hope for this one to be the one that flies.
