Brief Description:  fabricating axels

First I had to build a jig or fixture to hold the axel perpendicular to the mounting plate while I welded it. Image 1 below shows the parts of that fixture, a picture of the completed fixture is on tomorrow's log. Image 2 shows the joint preparation for the weld between the mounting plate and the axe. The axel itself is just a 3/4- inch bolt with its head cut off. I beveled the end of the bolt and the inside circumference of the hole in the mounting plate. I wanted to get 100 % penetration on this weld because the mounting plate is only 1/4 inch thick, and needs to be perfectly flat on both sides. One side bolts against the flat surface of the landing gear, and the other side has the brake caliper mounting bracket bolted against it so it also has to be flat and clear with no weld reinforcement to interfere with the caliper holder sitting flat. Image 3 is me using a cone grinder to get that bevel in the mounting plate.
