Brief Description:  Battery Installation / Ground Bus Connection / Bat

The next thing I needed to complete was the actual fitting and installation of the Earth-X lithium battery. The battery box was designed and made for this battery, so I was happy when the fit was perfect. The battery comes with foam with adhesive backing that you use as spacers and insulation to center the battery and protect it from both movement and vibration. Once the foam was installed, I then made insulation that would protect the battery cables from the sides of the openings under the lid. I also glued the same thick fuel tank saddle rubber material to the underside of the battery box lid so the battery couldn’t short against the top at any time.

The large gauge ground connection from the ground busses was one of the very last pieces of the electrical system to complete, other than a few outstanding wiring. I was able to make a nice crossing to the frame ground behind the electrical boards using adel clamps. Very secure.

I think I mentioned earlier that I completely forgot to install the oil sender switch that mounts to one of the top ports on the engine that is now inaccessible behind the engine shroud. I was bummed to have to ONCE AGAIN go backwards before going forward, but it is what it is. Like I’ve said before, I think I’ve built like 7 helicopters by now if you consider all the things I’ve had to go back and do over before it could be deemed complete. Regardless, you just have to jump in and get moving in the right direction, which is what I did.

I had to start by cutting the hose clamps that connect the oil system to the valve covers. I then removed all of the screws except for a couple holding on the side of the shroud. Then I removed the valve covers and finally the last screws holding the panel. Before digging into the rest of the installation and wiring of the switch, I reinstalled the old valve covers on that side to protect the engine from dirt, dust, and metal that was likely to be flying around while I was cutting a hole for the wire. (To be continued)
