Brief Description:  Wiring & Roll Trim

The day that I’ve been dreading…WIRING DAY! I cleaned the shop so I could just about eat off the floor, then started rolling out all the wiring and harnesses I had. The first thing I noticed was that the harness wasn’t labeled has indicated in the manual or as my buddy Tom’s was in PA. It wasn’t that big of a deal since I had the schematics, so I traced it all out and labeled it myself.

Once I had a grip on where everything was going to go, I turned my attention to installing the circuit board under the co-pilot’s seat. It’s two sided, with the master and starter solenoid on the bottom. I then tackled the major wiring harness and routed everything to it’s respective locations. It’s going to look disheveled until the very end because I don’t want to begin bundling and securing until I know that everything is installed, and working.

I also ran the additional avionics harnesses though the wiring bay, and finally cut the exterior firewall hole and installed the 1 3/4” grommet to protect the wiring. There will be a lot of connections going back to the engine through both the top and bottom of the firewall.

As I was running the wiring and choosing routes, I realized that the additional motors and equipment remaining to be installed is likely going to conflict with the wiring attachment points. The wiring is more flexible, so I decided to focus on some of the control rods, trim motors, governor, etc before I jump into wiring.

The roll motor is mounted behind the aft kick panel. The instructions are actually not that bad, as with most technical things, they seem to make more sense after you get deeply into the project. Case in point, I actually took three tries to fully install the entire system. I kept making little mistakes that didn’t become apparent until I was close to completing. Every part has it’s own specific orientation, and needs to be respected. I was also required to use a number of EAA tricks such as crazy gluing the washers to the nuts, then the nuts to my finger in order to get t
