I’m anticipating the trailer, the tail boom, the rotor heads, engine, and the other remaining parts to arrive mid-February. I need to have a hanger secured so, at very least, I have a place to store the trailer. I suspect that I will be relocating the helicopter to the hanger sometime in March since I can’t install anything past the engine with the ceiling and door clearance I have in my garage. This is going to be a bummer since it is SO easy to just walk out the kitchen door and get a little work done on the helicopter.
The Tracy Municipal Airport is luckily only 6 minutes from my house, so that is going to be my best option. I thought about trying to get a hanger in Livermore where my Cirrus is hangered, but I think that it would be a complete hassle to be 45 minutes from home.
I met with Tracy Airport Operations Manager Nancy Earhart, and she is awesome! She showed me several hangers located in various areas of the airport. The first were the “portable” hangers which were small and had floor bracing that wouldn’t allow me to back a trailer in and out. They were not at all what I was looking for.
The next hanger was very nice and typically what you would expect a hanger to be. It was a similar metal building like my hanger in Livermore, but the doors were a roller type door that rolled back inside the hanger which would limit storing items along the sides of the hanger such as tool boxes or shelves.
The last hangers she showed me were actually redwood hangers with bypass doors. I have never seen anything like this and it has a really great feel. Nancy actually has the hanger right next to the one I picked out, so it will be great to have her there to watch over things for me a bit when I’m not around.
The hanger needed to be cleaned out and Nancy agreed to refinish the floor and add more lights since lighting is KEY for a build project. I know I will still need to add more, but this will be a good start. I have secured insurance from EAA (Falcon), and I have provided a deposit to
