Brief Description:  Panel Riveting and Assembly

In preparation of the final riveting, I wanted to make sure that the assigned rivets would still fit in the holes now that the panels have all been painted. If they were too tight, I would need to drill them out to accept the proper rivets. For the most part, all of the holes were large enough to accept the rivets, so that is a lot less work for me to do.

I then decided to see what I could rivet before Tom’s arrival to both reduce the amount of work he has to do, but also to tighten up my riveting skills. I riveted the bottom door hinge covers onto the bottom sill, then riveted the three bulkhead ribs onto the bottom belly panel. I let the rivet gun come off a few of the rivets and received a moon shaped cut on the rivet head, so I once again was able to use my rivet removal skills. Luckily, this was not a common practice, and I was able to learn from my mistakes. I think the belly came out nice, and it allowed me to begin to screw and cleco the majority of the other panels together so they will be ready for the team riveting next week.

It is absolutely amazing how different it looks to have the metal painted, even though it’s not the final exterior color. The interior working areas of the ships are going to be a nice brilliant white so when you go to service the aircraft, you will be in a very visible environment. Another benefit to the while color is that it quickly shows cracks and damage that other colors would mask. Case in point, I found a crack on a bend that came from the Safari shop that I had never seen when it was raw silver aluminum. I was able to fix it prior to assembly

Hopefully, I can do more cabin assembly tonight…
